We have been discussing shabbat on Fridays now for over a month, now it is time bring some light into our lives, the light of shabbat and Judaism.
The Jewish people, each and every one of us, is responsible to be a light. We must do our personal best to light up this world and make it a better place. We are taught countless times about the special significance of bringing light into our lives and the lives of those around us, whether it be metaphorical, physical, or spiritual.
Shabbat is also meant to be a light, it is meant to light up the universe with a special holy and spiritual light. Each and every one of us has the opportunity to team up with shabbat and bring light into the world. This was the intention of the instruction to light candles on Friday afternoon in honor of shabbat. We have an opportunity to light up the world with shabbat.
So this shabbat, light up the world! Get yourself two candles and check out these instructions. But it doesn’t end there, it is also your responsibility to make sure that that physical light is mirrored by spiritual light, find someone this shabbat who could use some light and brighten their day. Teach them what you have learned about shabbat and how this day can be an amazing Jewish experience!
Don’t forget, of course, that all the pillars of shabbat are always better when you build them together, so do your best to add this one to the previous ones we have discussed.
